Banshee is a music management and playback for Gnome. Banshee is just like Windows Media Player where you can import, organize and play your music files. With Banshee, you also can rip CDs, play and sync your iPod, create playlists, and burn audio and MP3 CDs. The first alpha version of Banshee 1.0 hits the street on March 13,2008 with new redesign user interface and new features. The second alpha released saw a support for video management and playback has been added.
New Features
Here is a list of the features added for Banshee 1.0
- Artist/Album Browser - the ability to filter a source by Artist and Album selections. The album view features glorious cover art previews.
- The Play Queue
- Last.fm Integration - Last.fm has been integrated to Banshee
- Software Equalizer - a build in equalizer
- Faster Startup - The startup time has been significantly reduced. For me, the previous version took like more than 20 second to load but this time on average it takes 3 seconds to fully load.
- Decreased Memory Footprint - more memory efficient and uses less system resources
Update: This method will install the latest stable version of Banshee 1.0. Using this method, you will be informed by update manager if there is any update to Banshee. I recommended you to use this method instead of using deb file.
How to install it
First what you need to do is edit your source.list file.
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
For Gutsy, you need to add
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/banshee-team/ubuntu gutsy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/banshee-team/ubuntu gutsy main
For Hardy,
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/banshee-team/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/banshee-team/ubuntu hardy main
Update the system
sudo apt-get update
Install Banshee
sudo apt-get install banshee-1

I gave banshee a try after your comment, but what I can’t get over is that there is no list of tracks/albums like exaile and amarok.
