Finally, after 4 days of hard work, I managed to get Ubuntu 8.04: Hardy Heron running on my laptop. I’m very happy with that even though I had to spent a lot of time on fixing the problems. Now, everything is working perfectly in my Ubuntu system except Hardware Information. The Hardware Information keep crashing when I try to open it. In this post, I want to share my experience upgrading to Hardy Heron.
Upgrading Ubuntu 7.10 to Ubuntu 8.04
On Saturday, I upgraded my Ubuntu 7.10 to Ubuntu 8.04 using the update manager. I clicked on upgrade and followed the instruction. A dialog box pop-up showing the upgrading process. After a while, the process stop and I got a dialog box saying that there was a problem with internet connection. It might be caused by too much load put on the server. For those with slow internet connection, I recommend you to download a live Cd.
Because of that problem, I decided to download a live CD. I torrent a Dvd image of 3.7 GB in just 2 hours. It was super amazing fast; the download speed went up to 600 KB/s. I burned the iso file and loaded it up. I wait for about an hour and the upgrading process finish. The process was really smooth, no problem occurred during the installation process.
I reboot my laptop and my windows vista is still there, that’s really good. There is no problem with the vista installation, I still can boot to my windows vista. So you don’t have to worry if you are doing dual boot. When I log in to my Ubuntu, everything works really well except my wireless and compiz fusion stop working. After I enable the restricted driver, my wireless working as usual. To enable my Compiz Fusion back, I install the newest ATI’s proprietary Linux driver using this guide. However my Compiz Fusion still not working. When I try to enable visual effect, I got a message telling me to enable my graphic card. Why should I enable it, I just installed the drive and the driver works. I spent a lot of time searching for the answer and changing some configuration file to enable Compiz Fusion. At the end ,what I got is, my xserver broke.

Fresh Install Ubuntu 8.10
Since I cannot figure out how to make my Compiz Fusion working, I decided to do fresh install. The installation process proceed smoothly without any error. First, I enable the restricted driver to make my wireless working. Then I used EnvyNG to install the ATI’s proprietary Linux driver. This software make the installation much more easier. It will detect your graphic card model and install the appropriate driver for you. It also configure Xserver for you. To get compiz fusion running in my Ubuntu, I used this guide. I got all plugin work and also the Compiz Fusion Icon installed.
Ubuntu 8.04 comes with Firefox 3 beta 5 as a default browser, however there are whole bunch of extensions that do not work with Firefox 3 beta 5. I removed Firefox 3 beta 5 and installed Firefox 2.o using synaptic. I’m going to wait for Mozilla to release a stable version first. For now, I will just stick with Firefox 2.o.
With the new ATI driver, I have no more problem with video playback. No more flickery video. Videos just play smoothly even though Compiz Fusion is enable. Also, slow scrolling problem in Firefox that I had before is gone.
