Here are some great open source applications which I use most of the time. These applications can be installed in Microsoft Windows, Linux and OS X. I would like to recommend you to install and use it as your main applications. These open source applications can be downloaded for free and can be distributed. If you know programming, you can modify the source code and distribute it.

Mozilla Firefox.

I am pretty sure that you already knew about this great web browser called Mozilla Firefox. If you don’t have any idea about Mozilla Firefox, let me tell you a little bit about this web browser. Mozilla Firefox is a cross platform web browser developed by Mozilla Foundation which is secure and faster than Internet Explore. Mozilla Firefox includes pop-up blocking, a tab-browsing, a spell checker, incremental find, live bookmarking, a download manager and integrated Google searching. Mozilla Firefox also comes with simplified privacy controls that let you cover your tracks more effectively. Mozilla Thunderbird

Mozilla Thunderbird is also a product of Mozilla Foundation. Mozilla Thunderbird is a cross platform email and news client which uses Mozilla codebase. Mozilla Thunderbird has many features such as quick search, saved search folders (”virtual folders”), advanced message filtering, message grouping, and labels to assist you to stay organized. Mozilla Thunderbird can manage multiple e-mail, newsgroup and RSS accounts and supports multiple identities within accounts.Unlike many other products, Mozilla Thunderbird doesn’t allow scripts to run by default. This results in a more secure product than other mail clients on the market and helps stop the spreading of worms and viruses on the Web. OpenOffice.org

OpenOffice.org is a multiplatform office application suite developed by Sun Microsystems and the community. OpenOffice.org uses OpenDocument standard as its default file format. This piece of software is compatible with the Microsoft Office ‘97-2003 formats and other common office software formats. It also able to read files which the original software package had said were corrupted and unusable.

OpenOffice.org comes with all the office application that you need to do your job. The components available include Writer (a word processor similar to Microsoft Word), Calc (a spreedsheet program similar to Microsoft Excel), Impress (a presentation program similar to Microsoft Power Point), Base ( a database program similar to Microsoft Access), Draw (a vector graphic editor) and Math (a tool for creating and editing mathematical formula). VLC Media Player

VLC Media Player is a multimedia player, encoder, and streamer which is developed by VideoLAN team. VLC can play various audio and video formats (MPEG, DivX, Ogg, and many more) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It has pretty nice interface.

Pidgin

Pidgin formerly know as Gaim is an instant messaging client which allows you to use multiple instant messaging accounts at a same time. Pidgin supports many features of the various networks, such as file transfer, away messages, and typing notification. One of the features which I like the most is tabbed message windows. You can enable tabbed message windows to organize all the conversation windows.

Gimp

Filezilla

Filezilla is an excellent FTP program with clean and nice user interface. The main features that Filezilla has are the site manager, message log, file and folder view, and the transfer queue. Azureus

Azureus Vuze is a BitTorrent client which is written using java programming language. Azureus comes with a lot of features such a multiple torrent downloads, upload and download speed limiting; both globally and per torrent, advanced seeding rules, adjustable disk cache and many more.
